I've noticed that good photographs are more challenging to take with compact cameras. Do you know why? It's because of the lack of bokeh. I've noticed that even poorly composed photos could look good if bokeh is present.

With compacts, you have to worry about the spatial composition of the subject as well as the spatial composition of the background. If you DON'T take the background into consideration, you could have a pretty ugly photo. Doesn't matter if the subject is JESUS, himself. If the background is cluttered, the photo would suck. If the spatial composition isn't right, the photo would suck.

With an SLR (and a high aperture obviously) you don't have to worry about this as much. Of course, finding the right aperture in a situation is an art in itself. (Blurring everything as opposed to blurring just a bit to accentuate the subject better.)

Still, good photography with SLRS is much, much easier to achieve than with compacts. With them, composing is A LOT less of a challenge.

Having said this, I can't WAIT to get a DSLR. Because frankly, making sure everything is composed right is downright tedious and takes away the fun of it all. Not to mention that bokeh makes things more emotional, more artsy-fartsy. Sure a moment may not be  as 'significant' in real life as it is in a photo but you have to remember that photography believe it or not, is SUBJECTIVE. Angles, bokeh, aperture, under/overexposure. All are in the hands of a photographer and all 'ALTER' the mood of a scene, depending on a photographer's preferences. Hell, by choosing a scene, you're deciding to MAGNIFY that scene out all others. It's subjective, really.

I know I was one of those people before who hated some photography genres before but now, I realized that what I FAILED to see then was that having a choice is what's most important.
Hell, go and shoot yourself and pose them online. Put princess glitter on your hair, on every freakin part of your body. Why should I condemn it, really? Photograhy is subjective is and affected largely by CHOICE. And that's what matters most.

Diverged a bit from the main point. But yeah. Hurrah for choice. And bokeh that make your crappy shots look good. :D
